“There we are,” Andi said. A sign at street level announced Venus Gallery & Gifts. At the bottom of the short red brick stairs that led down to the shop’s door, Megan paused a moment to look at the framed prints and objects d’art in the plate glass window.

Nervousness set in as Megan opened the door. The shop was more eclectic than she’d expected. Her eye caught a carved and hand painted wooden figure of a woman pirate. It should have been a horrible cliché, but there was something about the pirate’s stance and the knowing smirk painted on her face that made it stand out. She’d been afraid it would be a stuffy gallery like the kind she was used to in New York or DC. This was more of a friendly diverse sort of shop and as she scanned the walls looking at her potential competitors, she thought maybe her work might be up to snuff.

“Andi! And you must be Megan the photographer.”

“Nice to meet you,” Megan said as the woman she assumed was Sam took her hand and shook it firmly. She guessed Sam was more than a few years older as bits of grey were starting to intrude on her spiky black hair and her demeanor had a no nonsense self-assurance that Megan associated with someone who’d had the time to figure themselves out.

“So you’re the one who took that picture Andy’s using for her Facebook profile?” Sam nodded, apparently sizing Megan up. “It was good. Definitely a step up from the selfie from her phone she had up there before. She sent me a few other things. I like them. Even the ones I can’t sell.”

Her willingness to get down to business actually calmed Megan. This she understood. “I brought my keeper folder on an iPad. Andi’s pic was just a quick shot at the beach really,” Megan answered, pulling the tablet from her camera bag and calling up her photos.

“Do you have any thoughts on sale prices or strategies?” the woman asked, looking Megan straight in the eye.

“I’m not sure, I still think of myself as an amateur.”

“Well we’re more of a consumer shop than fine art. I like to think we are at the high end of what people who aren’t collectors are willing to spend. Maybe they want to pick up their first originals. Something to remind them of Provincetown. Something that won’t clear out their checking account, but is a step above some generic print from the museum catalog. Looking at what you got here, no offense to Lola, but I can’t use dogs. Some of the landscapes are nice, but I don’t think for me. I guess this one of the boat would work. I’ll have to think. People would be better, particularly if you can tell they’re a dyke or you can see Provincetown in the background.”

“I don’t have anything like that. I’ve only been here a few weeks. If that’s what you’re looking for though, I can keep it in mind for my next projects.
